You know that moment in Back to the Future when Doc Brown yells “Great Scott!”? That’s kind of how our story starts – with an exclamation that stuck around longer than your favourite movie quote.

A Name Game Plot Twist

Here’s the thing about names – they’re more powerful than a DeLorean at 88 mph.

But lets be real. Naming is HARD.

Just ask our founder, Emma-Jane Anderson (formerly McKay, and yes, that part matters to this story).

See, EmJ comes from the legendary McKay clan – we’re talking a heritage more colourful than your Spotify Wrapped and a tartan that would make your Instagram grid jealous (those blue and green hues? *chef’s kiss*).

But when it came to naming her creative agency, the journey wasn’t as simple as sticking a family crest on the door.

The Identity Crisis (Sort Of)

When starting this creative agency, EmJ faced the classic entrepreneur’s dilemma: what’s in a name? Turns out, quite a lot! Early contenders included ‘Clan Content’ (which sounded too much like ‘Clam Content’ – no offense to shellfish) and ‘McKay Creative’ (nice alliteration, but about as exciting as unbuttered toast).

She wanted something that would:

  • Honor her Scottish roots (without sounding like a seafood restaurant)
  • Pack more personality than your average “Creative Co.”
  • Make an impact bigger than your morning coffee

The Plot Twist That Stuck

Then came the moment – you know, like when you make a joke that’s actually genius, but you don’t realise it yet? During a chat with her sister (still rocking the McKay name), Emma-Jane cracked a joke about calling the business “Great Scott!” like our favourite fictional scientist always shouts about.

And like all good ideas, it refused to leave. It stuck in her head like that one song you can’t stop humming.

Why It Works (Besides Being Obviously Awesome)

Great Scot! isn’t just a name – it’s a whole vibe. It’s:

  • Bold as a Scottish warrior (but with a sense of humour)
  • Creative as your favourite plot twist
  • Confident as a cat ignoring your personal space
  • Pop culture savvy (without trying too hard)
  • Fun as your favourite GIF (and we have many)

In short, it’s everything we strive to be as a creative agency—memorable, impactful, and unapologetically unique.

Word to the wise

Sometimes, the best ideas come from jokes, just like some of the best stories start with “what if?”

Great Scot! embodies everything we are – bold, creative, and not afraid to stand out in a world of bland business names.

Plus, it’s way more fun to say than “insert generic creative agency name here.”

Ready to make something great together? Well, Great Scot! That’s exactly what we’re here for.

Written by a proud Scot who’s not sorry about using too many Back to the Future references. Actually, no such thing as too many.
